Our topics
This term we are learning:
English - Our learning is based around 'Kensuke's Kingdom' by Michael Morpurgo.
Maths - Our topics will include multiplication, division and fractions.
Geography - We will be investigating why the South Downs is more crowded than the Alps?
Bury Rangers - We will look at making Better Planet before half term and working towards our NOLA award after half term
RE -Before half term we will look at Hinduism 'Why Hindus want to collect good karma' and after half term we will look at Christianity 'What kind of a world did Jesus want".
Science - We will be looking at Animals inc Humans - bones, muscles and the digestive system
Computing - The focus will be on desktop publishing and branching databases
PE - Gymnastics
Music - Drumming and reading and writing rhythms
Art - Telling stories through making and Cloth, thread and paint
Relationships and Health Education - everyday substances, safety rules and laws, sleep and our emotional health.
We use the Key Stage 2 spelling scheme 'Sounds and Syllables'. This is a specific spelling scheme which focuses on splitting words into their syllables to help spell them accurately. Children will draw upon their phonic knowledge from Sounds Write and apply this to spell longer words. Every week they will spend 4 days learning a particular spelling pattern and some example words that demonstrate this spelling pattern. We will also be learning five words from the Y3/4 statutory spelling list each week.
Home learning
Our 'home learning' tasks will include times tables, reading, maths and spellings tasks.
Times Tables Practice
The curriculum tells us that children should know all their times tables (up to 12x) by the end of Year 4, so we want them to be confident and have fast recall of these. We will learn times tables in school, but have found that those who spend 5 minutes practising every day are the most confident and can apply their knowledge in other areas of maths quicker. We use Time Tables Rock Stars (TTRS) to help us with this. For children in Year 4, please make sure they play in the 'soundcheck' area of TTRS several times a week. This area most resembles the Multiplication Tables Check (MTC) that these children will complete in June.
The children can earn certificates, awarded in Monday afternoon assemblies, for 'most coins earned', 'increase in accuracy' and 'increase in correct answers'. The children get to dress up as a rockstar and hold rockstar props to pose for a rockstar photograph when they receive a 1st place certificate.
Reading
Please hear your child read for 5-10 minutes every day. Reading aloud helps check children's pronunciation and their understanding of what they have read. Their reading can be logged in the yellow reading record. The children have a yellow reading record where their reading should be logged. Dojos will be awarded to children who read at home regularly. Please ensure that their reading record and school reading book (if they are on a coloured book band) are in school everyday. We use these to listen to the children read whenever we can. Reading books will be changed regularly.
Spellings
The children will bring home a list of spellings on a Friday to practise at home. These will be the words that we have been learning in the week. It is a good chance for them to show tell you about the words and to practise their handwriting. Please encourage them to verbally split the word accurately into its syllables and spell each syllable individually using phonic knowledge. They can bring this back to school if they wish or keep them at home.
Maths
Freckle, a computer program, is another tool we can use to allow children to practise math at their own ability level, with questions tailored to them. Each week, there will be a task set based on the current maths learning in school. We will be shortly introducing it to our Year 3s in school and when they are familiar with it, we will set a homework task in the 'From my Teacher' section.
We know home learning can be an area of conflict at home. Please remember that it is NOT compulsory. It is your family choice whether tasks are completed or not. The spelling and Freckle tasks simple offer a way for you to see some of what your child is learning at school and for them to further practise the skills they are learning.
Behaviour
We continue to use the Good to be Green behaviour system and Class Dojo to reward children for demonstrating both our school and Christian values.
You will be able to view the points your child earns in Class Dojo and we reward milestones of 100, 200 and 300 with certificates in assemblies.
In the Good to be Green system, if a child makes a wrong choice we will give two verbal warnings - being specific about which rule has been broken. If this behaviour is then repeated, they will be issued a yellow card. Receiving a yellow card means they will have to miss some of the next playtime to complete a reflection sheet with an adult. If the child continues to break the rules, or is violent, then a red card will be given. This means the child will be spoken to by Mr. Moore and you will be called to discuss their behaviour.
